The First Rule is…

you do not talk about Fight Club, but I’m going to anyway. Today is the tenth anniversary of the movie, Fight Club. That just seems odd to me that a movie that affected my life so profoundly was released that long ago.

I am Jack’s filmic nostalgia.

Zombieland

Reblogged from angelsfancrc

angelsfancrc:

So tonight I saw Zombieland and it was alright. A good couple of hours, but nothing I would ever see again. The plot is essentially a group of four people traveling in post-apocalyptic America a couple of months after a virus spreads turning America into a zombie wastleand. These four are Columbus (played by Jesse Eisenberg), Tallahassee (played by Woody Harrelson), Witchita (played by Emma Stone), and Little Rock (played by Abigail Breslin). The movie itself, for a comedy, was not laugh-out-loud funny ,but did have its moments. I must say, it did make me interested to see other films of its kind, like Hot Fuzz.

First, let me get this off my chest. Jesse Eisenberg is the exact same actor as Michael Cera. As a matter of fact, I would not be surprised to see that the role of Columbus was written with Cera in mind. They both play the same character in pretty much every film: the  awkward nerdy guy. Yes, this is a character type I can relate with and I am always happy when they get the girl, but seriously, do we need two of these guys? I honestly want to see a movie with Eisenberg and Cera just to see what would happen. Who would be the cool guy in that movie? Also, what exactly has Eisenberg done to earn top billing on this film? Woody Harrelson was in an Academy Award winning movie (No Country For Old Men, one of the most boring films I have ever seen) as well as in one of the greatest sitcoms in history, Cheers. Abigail Breslin was nominated for an Academy Award. Okay, so Breslin’s charcter was a supporting one, but still. Esienberg has just done Adventureland, a movie that I am not very fond of.

Okay, now that I said that, let’s move on. Eisenberg’s character, Columbus, named so because he was going to go to Columbus, OH, is essentially what I described. A neurotic, almost obsessive compulsive, college student who had no shot of feeling the touch of a woman. He has these “rules” that serves as a recurring theme throughout the film, but only one really plays into the plot at all.A plot that is perfectly predictable, but one should not going in expecting plot twist after plot twist.

Columbus teams up with Tallahassee early on. He is the exact opposite of Columbus. He is the tough guy who not only can handle killing zombies, but thrives on it. He spends the entire film fixated on finding a Twinkie. Not really much more to say about this character. Quite frankly, I was not interested this character that much.

The two are unwittingly put up with Wichita and Little Rock, who are travelling to California to go to a theme park, Pacific Playland. Little Rock does not get a lot of screen time and once again, I do not care that much about her character. I care a little more for Stone’s Wichita, but Stone plays the same type of character she played in Superbad, a girl that you are supposed to like but that I always got this felling from that deep down she was a bitch (pardon my language). Then again, in this film, she does screw over Tallahassee and Columbus a couple of times, so maybe shes not supposed to be that likable. Nah. The film was meant for her to be likeable even with what shes done to Tallahassee and Columbus.

Also, after seeing this and Adventureland, I must say I think that Kristen Stewart of Adventureland is way hotter than Emma Stone. I always get an emo vibe from Emma Stone that is a major turn-off.

One last thought on the film. There is a really funny cameo. I won’t ruin it for you, but it did bring a lot of laughs from me.

Again, it was a likable film, but not one I would buy on DVD. I give it a B-.

See, Cody, I’m going to have to disagree with you. I wouldn’t say that Zombieland is the most original film on Earth, nor the most well-written, but I feel as though it was a delightful addition to the zombie comedy genre. The use of train-of-thought for comedic effect was clever, in my opinion.

I think the biggest let-down was the part you barely mentioned: the cameo. It wasn’t funny. The initial shock value was interesting, but I was laughing more after the cameo was over with. The dialogue was surprisingly witty for what should have just been a purely teenage comedy. Character development, while not the best, was actually rather nicely done and unique.

Zombieland wasn’t particularly ground-breaking, but it was a welcome addition to a genre that is just beginning to be explored: zomb-edy.

An Analysis of Se7en

Posted

Se7en was the best detective film to have come out of the 90s. Unfortunately, most people don’t remember this movie as much as they do David Fincher’s other masterpiece, Fight Club. I just rewatched Se7en on Wednesday, and I made a few interesting revelations about the movie’s symbolism and themes. Take this all with a grain of salt; I’m sure the movie is open to many different interpretations.

IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN Se7en, DO NOT READ THIS POST! IT CONTAINS SPOILERS!
